Episode 6 Recap: Fashion Face-off
In what first sounded like an awesome Project Runway All Stars challenge (finally!) turned into what felt like opposites day.
The judges like the looks no one else did. The people who are usually on the top were on the bottom. And a contestant favored to be in the finale, if not win, was eliminated.
All I can say is Heidi, Nina and Michael wouldn’t have let that judging mess happen. No, I’m still not over the judge switch for this special (and by special I mean bizarre) season of Project Runway.
This week’s challenge was a fashion face-off. The contestants had to create a weekend get away look from one of the four seasons. Each designer chose a getaway bag with a season written on the tag. Whatever season they chose, they’d have to design for and go up against the other designer who picked the same season
The pairings: Austin vs. Karen – Spring, Kenley vs. Mondo – Summer, Michael vs. Jerrell – Winter, Rami vs. Mila – autumn.
I do love the idea of this challenge. I think they should do more faceoff challenges. It would definitely be a nice way to present some of the sometimes-boring challenges.
There was finally some drama in the workroom between Micahel and Jerrell. Jerrell was pretty far on a coat when Michael scrapped his original plan and started making a look VERY similar to Jerrell’s. Jerrell was not happy. And it was clear that Michael was “inspired” by Jerrell. This is not the first time Michael has been accused of copying. Last season Gretchen accused him of such and just this season, April did as well.
On to the runway show.
Fierce Frocks
Rami’s look might not have paired the best colors, but the look as a whole was very rich looking and fashion forward. That jacket and those shoulders were definitely fierce. Jerrell’s look definitely outshined Michael’s. I’ve never seen him make something so wearable and “normal.”
Hot Messes
Austin was definitely channeling Sophia Petrillo with his look. While the pants were well-made, they looked like khaki polyester. Those two words combined might be the worst sound on the planet. Say them out loud. Kenley’s look might not have actually been a hot mess, but I think it looked like something a 4-year-old would wear. And it has to be mentioned how much of a one-note she is. She designs the same thing every week.
And now on to the part where the judges get almost everything wrong. They face-off winners were Kara, Kenley, Mila and Jerrell. OK, I agree with Jerrell’s win, but that’s about it. So the Bottom 4 are Rami, Mondo, Austin and Michael. The only name in that bottom that even kind of makes sense is Michael’s.
The judges send Rami home. Which is not what anyone expected. I predicted a Rami/Mondo finale from day one. And that’s how it probably would’ve been had this special season been judged by the REAL judges.
