5 Reasons to Watch RuPaul’s Drag Race

5 Reasons to Watch RuPaul’s Drag Race

The fourth season of Logo’s underappreciated RuPaul’s Drag Race premieres Monday and I’m going to give you five reasons why you should watch.

1. The Eleganza! Nobody can dress like a man in a dress. The drag queens are often tasked to make over-the-top outfits and that’s part of the fun. The finished products have to be bigger and better than the others or the queens will find themselves “sashaying away.”

2. The Lingo. Dragspeak has been around as long as drag queens. But it’s fun to actually have a reason to use terms like “hunty,” “fish,” “reading” and “OOOOOOOKAAAY.” Confused? Would you like me to use those words in a sentence? “Ooooh girl. I be reading that bitch for not serving enough fish. This ain’t no pancake breakfast. You better werk. Hunty. OOOOOOOOKAAAAY.” Still confused? Watch a few episodes, you won’t be.

3. The drama! Much like the eleganza, who can serve up more drama than a man in a dress? No one! In seasons past they’ve had catfight after catfight. From one queen picking up another one during a performance to shouting matches that result in catchphrases like “Bitch, I’m from Chicago!”

4. The lip sync. The queens who have the lowest scores after the challenges have one final shot at remaining on the show. So they have to lip sync for their lives. And they do. Who wouldn’t want to watch a dance-off to Stacy Q’s “Two of Hearts.”

5. Sharon Needles. Every season there’s a queen that jumps out and grabs me from the get-go. There was Tammie Brown in Season One. Pandora Boxx in Season Two and Manila Luzan from Season 3. This season, it’s Sharon Needles. When I first watched her intro video a couple months ago, I was sold. My favorite line from the intro video: “I live in Pittsburgh because it’s as dilapidated, dirty, and poor as me.” And that’s how she portrays herself. She’s not one for sequins and glitz; she’s all about the performance, the costume, the persona and the shock value. And she’s versatile. She’s channeled everyone from Freddie Krueger to Peg Bundy to Justin Bieber. Her talent will definitely amp up the Season 4 fierceness. Here’s to hoping she makes it far in the contest.

RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 4 premieres Monday at 9 pm on Logo.
